When we were in Vegas on the At It Again Tour this cat named P.O.L.O – Poets Only Live Once – murdered the microphone, owned the stage, and rocked the crowd hard. After the show I was able to grab video of a parking lot cypher between P.O.L.O. and Charlie Madness with DJ Uppercutz on the Beatbox.
P.O.L.O. recently changed his stage name to Snap Murphy. Peep the new video and the brief interview below.
Tell the people who you are and where you’re from.
I grew up in Hammond, Indiana outside of Chicago and moved to Las Vegas at 8 years old. I am now 29 and have been rapping by the name of P.O.L.O for the last 17 years. My influences into Hip Hop came at a very young age due to my 2 older brothers locking me in their room and forcing me to watch “yo MTV raps” ! I actually thought I would grow up hating rap music because of how much I was forced to listen to it from the time I was 5 years old. Now here I am today a starving artist sacrificing everything I have for this dream.
What’s the scene like in Las Vegas? What other artists should we watch for?
The hardest thing for our hip hop scene in Las Vegas is the support. It’s very hard to perform in front of a huge fan base, because the city itself doesn’t support local talent as much as they do worldwide talent. I find though that vegas is all about what you make of it. I have a solid team right now in Charlie Madness and Eerie Verse. We look out for each other and support each other as a unit. I think that vegas isn’t taken serious with its local talent and so my people are showing the rest of the world what vegas hip hop has to offer. Lookout for Charlie Madness, Eerie Verse, Hassan, and myself Snap Murphy!
What inspired and motivated you to pursue music and specifically Hip Hop?
I grew up with my mom bartending to raise 3 kids. My 2 brothers in gangs stabbed and shot and I told myself I don’t want to see my family suffer like this. I use to sit in my home listening to screaming, yelling, and fighting between my mom, brothers, and stepfather. I use to sit in my room and visualize a peaceful place.
I saw the streets from my brothers and I went to school and was the first one to graduate high school. I use to write short stories when I was in 5th grade they put me in a creative writing class in college over summer. I knew then I had a gift of words and when I wrote my first song I told myself I want people to listen to my music versus writing a book because it will reach an audience easier.
My motivation comes from watching my family suffer and Hip Hop was the answer for me to talk about my life. When I step on stage the audience feels the energy and passion that i carry. I take music very seriously because its the only thing I have ever been great at!
