Break the ice. Who are you? Where are you from? What style of music do you create?
Well , my name is Rob Hicks. Im a 23 year old recording artist from Racine, Wi. If you dont know where that is , its like 20 minutes away from Milwaukee, Wi, and about 2 hours away from Chicago , IL. Basically i just create music. Like i love the actual art of music. I feel that every artist has both a story and a vision, and i try to tell my story along with letting listeners hear where im trying to go through my music.
We recently featured your new project LXSTSXULS; what were you trying to accomplish with this project?
Yea, that was a huge part of the success i had for the LXSTSXULS album release thank you. But i learn to not get any real expectations with this music thing. You can get your heart broken and dreams crushed pretty quickly if you do, i just create. So i really wasn’t trying to accomplish anything with the album. To make a long story short, The project was basically about any and everyone who’s made a bad decision or two in their life. Like noone is perfect . I felt that coming up in an era where p***y money and weed is sort of like the “thing”, people would listen, but at the same time, understand the negatives of living that type of life as well. That’s basically what LXSTSXULS was about.
To be so young, you have been at this for a really long time. How were you able to get into music at such a young age and stay focused?
Like my pops was and still is really into music. He listens to weird s**t though.(laughs) Back in the day he was a DJ. He would take me to like weddings, house parties and other events where he would dj at. I really enjoyed the environment, and i saw the love he was receiving from it, so thats really how i got into hip hop. As far as staying focused goes. I just try to better myself. Im always critiquing my work. Even when people dont realize when i mess up on a line or while im performing, i know i messed up, ya know? I just always try to progress honestly.
How is Hip Hop in Wisconsin? How do you feel about the current state of Hip Hop? Locally, mainstream, underground, or otherwise?
I Mean Wisconsin hip hop is definitely slept on. I feel like its easy for others to say that we aren’t making any moves when they’re never in Wisconsin. And rightfully so, i mean Wisconsin hasn’t exactly produced a major hip hop artist like ever. But there’s definitely Talent here. I feel like you would have to be here to understand what i mean by that though. I think Hip Hop is in a great state. I honestly dig Independent hip hop more then the majors right now. I mean look at people like Macklemore, Hopsin, Dizzy Wright, Tech N9NE, Danny Brown, Ab-Soul, ect. The brand that they’ve created without a major label co signing is just amazing.
What are you working on for the rest of 2014? What can we expect next?
You can expect to hear me on the Sounds of Faith compilation album. It actually drops next month. It’s called “the recipe”. Working with my labelmates has been a blast. Definitely look out for that. Im not stopping there though. I’m dropping another collab mixtape with my homie Esch to end the year as well. Besides that , just dropping visuals to selected tracks from LXSTSXULS, so we still got alot of work to do before the year is over.
Is the internet helping you connect with fans and gain exposure? Are there any obstacles you have had to overcome?
Absolutely. Without the internet i would have to interact with everyone in person which in today’s day and age is damn near impossible when your still on the come up. Its certainly a plus. Everyone overcomes obstacles, everyone has issues. I feel like my story really isn’t that much more different then an average, every day person. I think thats why alot of people dig my music as well. It’s very authentic and modern, but at the same time, its very creative.
Who else did you work with on LXSTSXULS?
Everyone that was featured on the project really. All of them. It was a blast working with those guys. They’re all talented and i believe in them all.I worked on a couple tracks with a few talented females from Milwaukee that were suppose to make the album, but didnt. So you guys should be hearing some “album leftovers” soon as well.
Where can we connect with you online? Stream your music?
Any last thoughts? Shout outs?
Just watch out for me (laughs) dont be surprised if im on one of those freshman covers soon. I have big dreams and i refuse to sell myself short. .Yeah man s/o to Racine. That’s my city. S/O to the team SOF, S/O to you guys as well for showing love, and last but definitely not least s/o to the support system, thank you.
