Tell the people who you are and where you’re from.
I came up in the Austin Hip Hop scene of the late 90’s early 2000’s which was just beginning to be emergent when I left and headed up north for Music and College. I joined my buddy’s Jazz-Hop band: Doctopus (Fusion of Jazz Funk and Hip Hop) and started going to college up here in Denton. That was in 2002…
After Doctopus, I front manned my own band for a while called Muenster Emcee and the Skeleton Krew; which was real dope. I had a drummer, a percussionist, a horn section, a bassist, and a guitar player, with me leading on vocals.
We did the Dallas night life scene for a couple years before disbanding and working on our own music. Once I had the band thing wrapped up I was able to focus on more “Strictly Hip Hop” type ish….. And that’s where we get to today, me, Muenster. Crushin mic’s and stylin on y’all jus a lil bit…
What’s the scene like in Denton?
The scene here in Denton is thick with it man. There is so much talent crammed in this lil 20 mile or so radius that is Denton Texas. You got so many talented MC’s and producers all trying to get it; and for the most part there is a nice level of cohesion and camaraderie. There’s always some level of gassed up BS and Fuckery but for the most part the scene here is full of love.
Back in 04 some Denton homies and I formed a group called Vortexas and we lurked hard on the scene for years, we’ve all since branched off to work on our solo stuff and/or other musical projects but, with what we as Vortexas did, created a new Hip Hop scene in Denton and really put what we’re all doing in this awesome little microcosm of Texas on the map Hip Hop wise.
I ran a weekly for a year and a half or so with local DJ, DJ Aquanot which allowed us to put on a lot of good folks from the DFW. Really, the weekly set the tone for the past decade plus of Denton hip hop.
What other artists should we watch for?
I’m not even gonna name drop here, just watch out for the gambit of folks hailing from the Nine Four Owe. Period.
What inspired and motivated you to pursue music and specifically Hip Hop?
I grew up on the classics, old funk and soul from Motown and Stax, PE,Run DMC, Fat Boys to Boogie Down, Freestyle Fellowship to De La Soul. I bought tape after tape as a kid, anything I could get my hands on from Rap Masters in the late 80’s to Candyman and LL Cool J in the early 90’s to Project Blowed, WU, ATCQ, KRS-1, Living Legends, Artifacts, Organized Konfusion, Hiero, man… you name it, I was listening, soaking it in, and studying the styles.
To me Hip Hop is really just an extension of Jazz music. Improvisation and stylization are the most predominate driving forces for me when creating and listening to music. So for me it was a natural course, I don’t think I had a choice in the matter, I mean.. we all have choices, but we also have internal mechanisms that make us tick. For me Hip Hop just runs in my blood.
I can’t ever think of a time when some aspect of Hip Hop music was not part of me. Real talk right there Fam.
