True stories usually make for pretty good songs. The plot behind my December 4th release “No Presence” is one of those cases.
I met this guy back in 2006-07; called himself The Gift. He was from Chicago but had just been released and was doing time in a halfway house in Nashville.
Through mutual friends we met, began recording music together, but then it became more than that…
Months later I was receiving bricks of Mexican grass through the mail which led to a whole load of other bulshi…. but I’ll leave that your imagination.
You can figure out the “true story” by paying attention to the lyrics.
The only reason I decided to release this is based on the response I’ve received from individuals who have heard it and been impressed or simply read the lyrics and had a “oh you should put this out” reaction.
The song goes hard. It was written and recorded in 2007-ish and I have not spoken to this person since…
I think about him and his sister often because we formed a lot of memories together but then I remember all the ish I learned about him and his history while spending a really cold night in Iowa…
We actually drove through a bad snow storm from Iowa to MTSU. I made it back in time for class the next morning, BUT I fell asleep in a chair in a study area and slept through all the classes I had rushed back home for…. such is life.
The moral of the story, at least for me, is be careful who you trust and allow yourself to become “friends” with. On a deeper level it causes one to ponder what friendship really is what defines a friend.
